Culture: 2017 A Year in Review

Well, we have come to the end of 2017 – it wasn’t as traumatic a year as 2016 was, but still was a busy year and many things did happen.

Celebrity Deaths 

2016 was the worst year for Celebrity deaths, but 2017 saw some greats pass away as well. Starting on 1 January with Stuart Hamilton, a Canadian Pianist and Artistic Director Emeritus of Opera in Concert and ending on 29 December with Danny Breen, Actor, and Producer.

There are too many for me to list so here is a list of those who made an important impact on people’s lives in one way or another:

British News

In March Northern Ireland had an election which saw the Democratic Unionist Party lose ten seats and Sinn Fein lost one seat.

On March 29, the UK triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which was the start of Brexit negotiations – the talks for the UK to leave the EU.

In May the Duke of Edinburgh stepped down from royal engagements.
On May 22 the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester ended in a terrorist attack with 22 people dead and over 500 injured.

In June 8 another election took place in the United Kingdom which saw the Conservatives losing seats and forming a coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party.

On June 14 a major fire engulfed Grenfell Tower in West London killing 71 people.

In July Vince Cable became the new leader of the Liberal Democrats

In August the chimes of Big Ben fell silent as a four-year renovation of the building begins.

In September it was announced that Prince William and Catherine are expecting their third child.

In November the Queen and Prince Phillip celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

In November Prince Harry got engaged to Meghan Markel – an American actress.

In December the UK and the EU reached an agreement of the first stage of Brexit.


World News

On January 20 Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the USA

In May, many companies including the National Health Service had their computers held to ransom by a cyber attack which in total affected 150 countries.

In August Hurricane Harvey hit the US and caused damage to Houston leaving 90 people dead.

In September a deadly earthquake hit Mexico leaving 350 dead more than 6,000 injured and thousands are made homeless.

Also in September Hurricane Irma and Maria struck in Dominica, Puerto Rico and the US leaving 94 people dead.

In November Robert Mugabe resigned as president of Zimbabwe.

Lewis Hamilton won his fifth British Grand Prix and his fifth career Grand Slam on 16 July
